General Car Wash Formulation
Sea-Land offers a range of premium chemicals that can enhance professional car wash formulations. Crafting a car wash formula involves several key active ingredients: surfactants and detergents for cleaning, agents for foam creation, drying agents or rinse aids, and protectants.
- Surfactant/ Detergent– These are essential to help lift the soil from the vehicle. A good presoak surfactant to add to your formulation is TOMAKLEEN® X-50 because it is optimized for soil removal and is used in a wide range of car care products.
- Foam– increasing the foam in your formula will give extra cleaning time for your detergents. Customers often enjoy the foamy wash as well. TOMAMINE® AMPHOTERIC L will help to increase the foam in your car wash shampoo.
- Rinse Aid—It is important to add a rinse aid to the car wash formulation because it promotes a streak-free drying process on the vehicle. While they can be tricky to formulate, they are important for a spot-free wash. TOMADRY® E30 is an easy-to-formulate rinse aid that can be added to many standard car wash cleaner formulations.
- Protectant—Adding a protectant to your formula will help protect the vehicle’s surface from the environment. These include UV rays, dust, and bird droppings. Adding a product like TOMADRY® C340 to your formulation will provide some protection to the vehicle and help prolong the paint’s life.
Selecting the right chemicals for a car wash formulation can be challenging, but focusing on the desired results is essential. There are a lot of common car wash chemicals that can be used in your formulation chemistry. Auto Detailing Formulation
Automotive detailing products are formulated to help achieve one specific goal, such as cleaning the underbody of the vehicle or cleaning the interior fabric. These end products can be applied to the vehicle at a car wash, by a professional, or purchased for at-home use. From a car wash perspective, these chemicals are more specialty chemicals that you can get as an add-on to the tunnel wash.
You can also add specialty chemicals to elevate car wash formulations. These chemicals are add-ons at the car wash, like underbody rinses, wheels and tires, and bug wash. They help elevate the car wash experience and provide a deeper clean to the vehicle.
- Underbody—An underbody wash is designed to clean the soil from the road under the vehicle. TOMAMINE® DA-17 is an ether amine surfactant with corrosion inhibition and anti-corrosion properties. It is a great additive for an underbody soap.
- Wheels and Tires—Creating a wheel and tire shine product will help increase the dwell time of the product on the tire and increase the shine. SOLAGUM™ USPI will help thicken and emulsify the formula and works with silicone oil, which can be tough to formulate.
- Bug Wash– Bugs will leave a film on the exterior of the vehicle, which can be hard to remove due to the proteins in it. Having a product that helps wet and lift the film is important. Adding a product such as REWOQUAT® CQ 100G, which is suitable in many pHs, will help create an effective bug wash solution.
There are also auto detailing products for the car interior. These are car care products like leather cleaners and odor absorbers. Interior detailing products are formulated to do their one job very well and can be tough around other interior vehicle surfaces, such as the plastic dash. This makes them tricky to formulate.
- Leather Cleaner– taking care of interior surfaces such as leather can be tricky. Adding an additive such as SOLAGUM™ SH210 will help to emulsify and thicken the product, creating an effective leather conditioner and cleaner.
- Odor Absorber– TEGO Sorb® Conc. 50 is an ideal additive for an interior car care cleaner. This additive works to eliminate mal odors in the vehicle permanently and helps to create a superior car care product.

CARSPRAY® 300 drying aid is the premier cationic emulsifier for automatic car wash rinse aid formulations. Benefits of CARSPRAY® 300 include superior beading properties, superior emulsifier, substantive to the surface, protects the finish, promotes high shine, and is easily compounded.
REWOFERM® RL 100
REWOFERM® RL 100 is a high-performing biosurfactant. It is the first rhamnolipid commercially available on an industrial scale. REWOFERM® RL 100 is based on plant-based, regionally sourced (EU) raw materials and produced by the mild fermentation process. REWOFERM® RL 100 can act as a primary and secondary surfactant and reduce the complexity of cleaning formulations. It offers excellent cleaning performance and provides wetting and emulsification benefits at once. REWOFERM® RL 100 is suitable for ecolabel formulations.
TEGO™ Polish Additv Q 70
TEGO® Polish Additiv Q 70 is a high-molecular-weight silicone quaternary offering protection, high gloss, and a hydrophobic effect. It provides excellent beading and sheeting and has anti-static and anti-redeposition benefits. The material is water soluble and can be post-added to car rinse micro-emulsions.
